From Both Sides Now
2024
Illustrated in a five-picture-sequence entitled From Both Sides Now, these pictures are a near-documentation of hospitalized injuries. The reality of their pain helps shutter a harsh picture, but an honest picture nonetheless. So often the sensations of anxiety result in the inability to feel seen, but if the camera is in my hands how might I wish to be perceived? While each portrait captures what seems to be a physical injury, the true image lies beneath what is necessarily visible and presented– the real picture is developed in fear of their scars and the stigma of their emotions. This series of faces works to promote nothing beyond the borders of its frame; in other words, it markets nothing but itself, and the consequences that lie in interpretation. From Both Sides Now is to have lived from the perspective of both people, hurt and hurting. Sometimes it is also important to take a break and stop analyzing life from both sides now.
